Somalia’s former defence minister was killed in a car bomb on Monday, the latest in a string of attacks in the capital Mogadishu, police said. An Assistant Commissioner of Police, who was also in charge of the Area K, Morogbo, of the Lagos State Police Command, Osung Ekpo, has drowned in a hotel on Valentine’s Day in the Ajah area of the state. It was learnt that Ekpo died at about 5pm on Sunday while swimming in the hotel’s swimming pool. It was gathered that Ekpo was in company with friends on Sunday and had decided to relax in the swimming pool before he drowned. He was said to have been rescued from the pool by policemen and hotel workers, who rushed him to a nearby hospital. But he reportedly died a few minutes after, and was pronounced dead by the doctor on duty. According to witnesses, Ekpo’s corpse has been moved to a morgue while investigations to confirm the cause of his death were ongoing. The Police Public Relations Officer, Dolapo Badmus, confirmed the death, adding that investigations are ongoing.

A 28-year-old man Sunday Oboh on Monday told a Lagos State Magistrates’ Court in Igbosere that he stole a pair of briefs and several bars of medicated soap from a shopping mall in Lekki to take care of his wife and their newborn son. Oboh, from Delta State, was employed as a contract security guard and posted to a high end shopping mall, SPAR, in Lekki. He was making his way out of the store’s premises at about 9:18pm on February 10, when he was discovered to be in possession of several bars of soap. He couldn’t give a reasonable explanation for the items to the other guards on duty and, when a body search was carried out, it was found that the very pant Oboh was putting on that night was also stolen from the store. Dr Kabir Getso, Kano State Commissioner for Health, said on Monday in Kano that the state had recorded three confirmed cases of Lassa fever since the outbreak in December, 2015. Getso who spoke while addressing newsmen, said two of the confirmed cases were recorded in Garun-Malam Local Government Area of the state. The commissioner said that the patients died at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) on Dec. 2, 2015. He said that the third confirmed case, a young businessman from Dawakin Kudu Local Government Area, came to Kano from Benue last week. The commissioner said that all the contacts were identified and followed up. According to him, more than 70 per cent of them have either completed their 21 days follow up or tested negative. He, however, said that another two suspected cases were currently on admission at the designated isolation and treatment centre at Yar’gaya Hospital. There was a mild drama on Wednesday at a plaza on Plateau Club Road, Jos, Plateau State as the head of a suspected burglar got stuck between burglarproof bars while he was trying to escape with items he stole from a shop within the facility. Nigerians are the most romantic people in Africa, beating out other online customers in global money transfer leader Transfast’s Valentine’s Day survey. An impressive 80 percent of Nigerian respondents say they plan to celebrate Valentine’s Day, with 75 percent calling the holiday “Sweet – I like the sentiment behind it.” Of those less enamoured, thirteen percent say it’s “silly, but I put up with it ” and nine percent call it “a ridiculous money-making scheme.” Still, only three percent of Nigerians say Valentine’s Day is “stressful: I wish it would go away!” Most respondents, who are Transfast customers based in the U.S. or Canada, say their loved one is in the U.S. (54 percent), while 36 percent say their loved one is in Nigeria. A majority (53 percent) says they will send money home for Valentine’s Day, in amounts ranging from $50 to $2,000.
