Engineered insulin could offer better diabetes control

Image
For patients with diabetes, insulin is critical to maintaining good health and normal blood-sugar levels. However, it's not an ideal solution because it can be difficult for patients to determine exactly how much insulin they need to prevent their blood sugar from swinging too high or too low. MIT engineers hope to improve treatment for diabetes patients with a new type of engineered insulin. In tests in mice, the researchers showed that their modified insulin can circulate in the bloodstream for at least 10 hours, and that it responds rapidly to changes in blood-sugar levels. This could eliminate the need for patients to repeatedly monitor their blood sugar levels and inject insulin throughout the day. "The real challenge is getting the right amount of insulin available when you need it, because if you have too little insulin your blood sugar goes up, and if you have too much, it can go dangerously low," says Daniel Anderson, the Samuel A. Meth messes up brains of youths far more than adults

Adolescents who chronically use methamphetamine suffer greater and more widespread alterations in their brain than adults who chronically abuse the drug-and damage is particularly evident in a part of the brain believed to control the "executive function," researchers from the University of Utah and South Korea report. In a study with chronic adolescent and adult meth abusers in South Korea, MRI brain scans showed decreased thickness in the gray matter of younger users' frontal cortex, the area of the brain believed to direct people's ability to organize, reason and remember things, known as the executive function. A different type of MRI, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), indicated alterations to the adolescents' white matter, meaning possible damage to neurons-the cells that relay information via electrical signals from one part of the brain to another. The gray and white matter of chronic adult meth users showed far less damage than that of the ad

Neighbours shocked as US man shoots family, himself

A quiet, suburban neighbourhood outside Atlanta was left reeling after a man shot six people – killing four of them, including his ex-wife and several children – before ending the rampage by fatally turning the gun on himself, police said. The shooting happened Saturday around 15:00 in a subdivision about 32km west of Atlanta, Douglas County Sheriff’s Lieutenant Glenn Daniel said. Horrified neighbours called the police emergency dispatcher and then tried to help the severely wounded victims as best they could before rescuers arrived. The gunman was identified as Cedric G Prather, 33, who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said on Sunday. The sheriff’s office also identified the adults killed as Latoya A Andrews, Prather’s ex-wife; and Joseph Terry Brown. Both were 33 years old. A 7-year-old child died at the scene, and a 9-year-old was taken to a hospital but also died, the sheriff’s office said in a statement. Two other chi

After the postponement of the elections last weekend, there have been reports that President Goodluck Jonathan’s next move is to relieve Jega of his job and replace him with a pliant person to conduct the elections. Idowu also said the ballot papers for Nigeria’s presidential election scheduled to hold on 28 March were ready. He said the ballot papers had been delivered by the printers and that they were being kept in the vault of the Central Bank of Nigeria. He also disclosed that thousands of ad hoc st
