Female workers protest half naked in Ibadan

Image
Women workers of the Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria (CRIN), Ibadan, Oyo State, yesterday protested half naked against the institute’s Executive Director, Prof. Malachy Akoroda. Most of the women stripped to their underwear joined their male colleagues in occupying the main gate of the institution at Idi-Ayunre to force the Federal Government to remove Akoroda. The protesters shocked residents and motorists as they sang for over one hour, against the director, who they accused of maladministration. They barricaded the gate with logs of wood and loads of sand while a team of armed policemen kept close watch nearby. The protesting workers were also supported by the some community leaders and youths. The protest marked the peak of the labour crisis rocking the institute since 2013, when Akoroda introduced some measures to reposition the organisation. A paper jointly signed by the Baale of Odo-Ona Nla, Chief Yekeen Ogunyode and a representative of the workers, Solomon Adebiyo, reads:

Abia woman sells her grandson for N100,000

The Abia Police Command, on Tuesday confirmed the arrest of a woman, who allegedly sold her three-year-old grandson to a ritualist. The Command’s spokesman, DSP Udeviotu Onyeke told newsmen that the woman was in the custody of the police in Umuobiakwa, as investigation continues. He said that part of the investigation being carried out was to determine the sanity of the woman. The woman, who hailed from Onitsha Ngwa in Obingwa Local Government of the state, had left the village with the child and returned a week later to report that he was missing. Sources in the village said that when the suspect was questioned about the missing boy, her response triggered suspiscion, thereby prompting the villagers to invite the police. The suspect, allegedly told the police that she sold the boy for N100, 000 to a native doctor in Akwa Ibom and wanted to use the money to buy a motorcycle before end of the year. The police spokesman, however, said that the woman had since changed her statement, claim

Alleged rape victim sues Bill Cosby for defamation

Image
A New Hampshire woman, Kristina Ruehli, on Monday sued Bill Cosby for defamation, saying he falsely accused her of lying last year when she publicly said he raped her in 1965. The suit follows similar legal actions in federal court in Massachusetts, where Cosby lives, and in California. The 78-year-old actor, best known for his role in the 1980s “The Cosby Show,” wrongly claimed that women he had allegedly assaulted sexually lied about him. More than 50 women have come forward to accuse Cosby of sexually assaulting them after plying them with drugs or alcohol, allegations Cosby had denied. The comedian has never been criminally charged and many of the alleged incidents date back decades that the statute of limitations for prosecution had long run out. In papers filed in U.S. District Court in Springfield, Massachusetts, Ruehli repeated claims she made in an interview with Philadelphia Magazine, last year. She claimed that Cosby drugged her and sexually assaulted her in his California

Sacked priest accuses Vatican of making life ‘hell’ for gays

Image
A high-ranking Polish Catholic priest who was sacked after he came out as gay has accused the Vatican of making the lives of homosexuals “a hell”, in a letter sent to the pope seen Wednesday by AFP. Krzysztof Charamsa thanked Pope Francis for his positive words and gestures but criticised what he called the Vatican’s hypocrisy in banning gay priests even though he said the clergy was “full” of homosexuals. “Have a minimum of mercy. At least leave us alone, allow civil societies to make our lives more human, while you, with your church, have managed to make the lives of us homosexuals a hell,” he wrote in the letter dated October 3. Charamsa sparked outrage at the Vatican that day by publicly declaring his homosexuality — and presenting his Spanish boyfriend Eduardo Planas — on the eve of a bishops’ synod which touched on the divisive issue of the Church’s relationship to gay believers. A Polish bishop last week defrocked the 43-year-old priest, who now lives in Barc

Never again would politicians seek public office for personal gains – Buhari

Image
President Muhammadu Buhari has said that his main target for fighting corruption was to stop corrupt individuals from seeking to occupy public offices for selfish gains. This is even as he stated that his government would not relent in the current anti-corruption war, stressing it would continue to many years. According to him, the prosecution of alleged criminals would serve as a deterrent to others, stating that he was committed to curbing corruption, plugging all loopholes in public sector accounting and deploying available resources for the good of all Nigerians. The president spoke, Wednesday, during a meeting with members of the Nigerian community in New Delhi, India where he is attending the 3rd Summit of the India and African Nations. President Buhari also prioritized the recovery of looted funds, saying he was conscious of the devastating consequences of the illegal diversion of public resources meant for national development into private bank accounts.

France to lift ban on gay men giving blood

Image
France will lift a ban on gay men donating blood, introduced in the 1980s to prevent the spread of AIDS but criticised by rights groups, the health minister said Wednesday. “Giving blood is an act of generosity, of civic responsibility, and the donor’s sexual orientation cannot be a condition,” Marisol Touraine announced in Paris. “While respecting patient safety, today we are lifting a taboo,” she said. Touraine said the lifting of the ban, promised by Francois Hollande in his presidential campaign, will happen in stages, starting next year. At first, donation of “whole blood” — the red cells, plasma and platelets — will be open to gay men who have not been sexually active for the preceding 12 months, she specified. For donations of only plasma, the liquid component of blood, donors will be considered if they have not had sex with another man for four months, or were in a monogamous relationship. Experts will then analyse whether the change had brought about any addi

Responding to allegations by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, that he was demarketing the country and dissuading foreign investments, the President vowed that the relentless tackles of the opposition party would not in any way dissuade him from his obligations to the citizenry and the international community. The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh had, yesterday, attacked the President’s claim in India that Nigeria was broke, saying that such claims at international fora tended to worsen the country’s investment climate. Metuh had, in his statement, alleged that such claims by the President were essentially because of his lack of a viable economic plan. Responding to PDP yesterday, presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, said that Metuh’s attempts to distract the President from focusing on his job would fail, maintaining that he was a broken record. The statement read in part: “Our attention has been drawn to the latest statement by the PDP spokesm

Fuel scarcity in lagos and Ogun state

Image
Fuel scarcity, which had disappeared since April, resurfaced yesterday in Lagos and some parts of Ogun State with long queues at several retail outlets. It was learnt that there was a huge supply deficit because some oil marketers refused to import the product, leaving only the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) as the sole importer of premium motor spirit (petrol). A marketer told our correspondent in confidence that demand far outstripped supply, adding there were over 200 retail outlet owners who had paid for petrol in the last three months but could not get supply. The marketer said his colleagues told the NNPC that they did not have money, besides being owed over N200 billion in verified subsidy claims. He said this was why many marketers could no longer import fuel. “It is only the NNPC that currently imports, and its focus is on Abuja and Lagos. Other states have been experiencing scarcity in the last three months. Fuel trucks from such states ha
