Cancel Imo gov election, PDP urges INEC

The national leadership of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, yesterday, asked the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to cancel the results of the governorship election in Imo State and order for fresh poll over alleged manipulation, electoral malpractice and harassment of officers.

This came on a day angry supporters of the party demonstrated against what they tagged ‘irregularities’ which marred the governorship and state assembly elections in Imo State.

Addressing journalists in Abuja yesterday, PDP National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, noted that the election was rigged in favour of the ruling party in Imo State, the All Progressives Congress, APC, by INEC officials, alleging that there was massive violence in Owerri North and South local councils.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has declared the results of the election in the state inconclusive.
According to Metuh, INEC officials were forced to alter results in Ideato North and Oru local councils at gunpoint, and wrote fake results in favour of the APC.

He added that with the development in Imo State, ominous signs of dictatorship loomed in the air, if not nipped in the bud.

Metuh, who warned that if INEC failed to produce what they requested, they should give the people fresh elections in Imo State.
He said the party would not sit and allow the APC take over its strongholds, alleging that in collaboration with INEC, the APC tried to rig in Abia and other strongholds, but was resisted by the people.

The PDP spokesperson noted that Nigeria’s 16 years of democracy must be sustained and noted that unfolding scenarios was not in the interest of the hard-earned democracy.

Metuh said: “We demand the immediate halt to the announcement in Imo, cancellation of the elections and ordering of fresh elections in Imo.
‘’Our reasons is as follows: In Oru East LG, the electoral officers and other officials of INEC have confessed that indeed the APC forced them at gunpoint to re-write the result of the local government.”
