How Air Force plane crashed - witness

A witness yesterday spoke on how the Nigerian Air Force fighter jet on a bombing mission against Boko Haram crashed in a windstorm in Adamawa state town Hong. The pilot of the plane was killed according to the Air Force. The jet “returning to base from an interdicted mission crashed due to bad weather and not under enemy fire,” Air Force spokesman Commodore Dele Alonge said in a statement on Saturday. The Air Force yesterday said the Chief of Air Staff it had set up an investigation panel. The Chinese-built Chengdu F7 went down in a rural area of Adamawa State, Commodore Alonge said. The crash happened in an area where Boko Haram Islamic extremists last year shot down a military jet and beheaded its pilot. Trapped thief calls police for help

A trapped thief in Germany called the police for help, officials said on Monday. The man had broken into a house in Bonn in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia but got stuck in a storage room when the door slammed shut behind him. He was forced to call the police, who freed him from his unexpected prison before delivering him temporarily to another. The unlucky would-be thief was already known to the police and was booked before being released on his own recognition.

Lagos governor begins road reconstruction in lagos

The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, says the government is ready to start the reconstruction of two roads in each of the 20 local government and 37 local council development areas in the state. The governor, who spoke at the Lagos House, Ikeja, on Monday during the monthly meeting with the executive secretaries of the 57 councils, added that the council bosses must ensure that the projects meet the international standard. He also told the executive secretaries to review the progress report in their various communities as well as their challenges. He said, “The decision to embark on the road rehabilitation is in line with the reforms at the local government level. 17 babies, pregnant teenagers rescued from Imo baby factory

About 17 babies and four pregnant teenagers have been rescued by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps operatives in Imo State from an orphanage home allegedly being used as a baby factory. Speaking with newsmen in Owerri on Friday, the State Commandant, Pedro Idiba, said the command, acting on a tip-off, stormed the orphanage home, known as Jehovah Jireh, located at Orlu in Orlu Local Government Area of the state at about 9.30am on Thursday, last week. Idiba gave the names of the teenage girls as Onyedikachi Obialor, Oluchi Uzoma, Hope Ndukwu and Ogechi Njoku, adding that a two weeks old baby, belonging to one Kasarachi, was among the babies rescued from the supposed orphanage home. Robbers raid Imo Airport, escape with N20m

Suspected armed robbers on Friday morning raided a micro finance bank located in the Sam Mbakwe Cargo Airport, as well as the offices of Arik and Air Peace Airlines in Imo State. Over N20m and other valuables were said to have been carted away in the robbery that lasted just a few minutes. According to an eye witness, the armed robbers who besieged the airport in two unmarked vehicles, overpowered the security men attached to the bank. The source who stated that the noise of banging of doors and windows by the robbers coupled with their gunshots scared people away from the scene. An employee of Arik, who didn’t want to be named, said their offices were broken into, company and personal valuables of the workers were stolen. NDLEA arrests Brazil-bound passenger with $34,000 in underwear

The statement said the passenger, Ozoh Ikenna, was arrested at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, during the screening of passengers boarding Etihad Airways flight to Abu Dhabi. It said the money was packed in wraps and concealed in Ikenna’s boxer shorts. According to the statement, the NDLEA airport commander, Mr Ahmadu Garba, said the arrest was facilitated with the aid of a scanning machine. “The wraps of dollars found on Ikenna were detected with the aid of scanning machine. “We also conducted a follow-up operation where one Ogbo Emmanuel, who gave Ozoh the $34,000 was arrested,” the commander is quoted as saying. Drama in Ilorin as suspected robber falls from bank’s roof

There was drama on Friday at the Unity Road Branch of Guaranty Trust Bank in Ilorin as a suspected robber fell from the bank’s roof, throwing the banking hall into pandemonium. NAN gathered that the suspect was hiding in the roof of the bank while waiting for his accomplices to commence a robbery operation when he fell. A security man attached to the bank told NAN on condition of anonymity that the suspected robber must have been hiding in the roof overnight. He also said nobody knew how the suspect got into the roof of the bank as there was no sign of damage to any of the security doors in the bank. The security man said the suspect was promptly apprehended by some customers inside the banking hall and later handed over to the police.
