Hundreds of hidden nearby galaxies have been studied for the first time, shedding light on a mysterious gravitational anomaly dubbed the Great Attractor. Despite being just 250 million light years from Earth – very close in astronomical terms – the new galaxies had been hidden from view until now by our own galaxy, the Milky Way, a statement by the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research said. The discovery was contained in a study published on Tuesday by the ICRAR. Using CSIRO’s Parkes radio telescope equipped with an innovative receiver, an international team of scientists were able to see through the stars and dust of the Milky Way, into a previously unexplored region of space. The discovery may help to explain the Great Attractor region, which appears to be drawing the Milky Way and hundreds of thousands of other galaxies towards it with a gravitational force equivalent to a million billion suns. The chief executive of Google, Sundar Pichai, has been awarded $199m (£138m) in shares, a regulatory filing has revealed. It makes him the highest-paid chief executive in the US. Mr Pichai became chief executive of the search engine giant following the creation of its parent, Alphabet. The founders of Google, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, have amassed fortunes of $34.6bn and $33.9bn, according to Forbes. Mr Pichai, 43, was awarded 273,328 Alphabet shares on 3 February, worth a total of $199m, according to a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission. The new award of shares takes Mr Pichai’s total stock value to approximately $650m. Mr Pichai’s share award will vest incrementally each quarter until 2019. They were later released on bail but face initial charges of causing mischief and damage to property, said officer Ram Sewak Paikra from Janakpur town in Korea district. “The goat and the owner were under police custody and are out, as both the sections 427 and 447 of the IPC (Indian Penal Code) are bailable offences,” Paikra told AFP. A Nigerian woman has been sentenced to nine years in prison in the United Kingdom after being found guilty of grievous bodily harm with intent. The London Evening Standard reported on Tuesday that the woman, Kenya Alozie, attacked her lover – a man in his 30s – while they were having sex at a house in Plumstead. The police told the Woolswich Crown Court where she was tried that the 31-year-old, who had no fixed abode, had attacked the man with a hot iron and a broken bottle in a violent and premeditated attack. According to the police, she had planned the attack beforehand by keeping a hot iron and broken bottle ready and using the iron to burn his legs and genitals and “crashing the bottle into him.” The LES also reported that the victim had to undergo surgery for some of the injuries he sustained in the attack. U S President Barack Obama has appointed a Nigerian, Adewale ‘Wally’ Adeyemo who served in top roles at the Treasury Department to succeed Caroline Atkinson as his deputy national security adviser for international economic affairs. Adeyemo, 34, has served in Obama’s administration since 2009. He joined the White House’s National Economic Council as deputy director. He was the Treasury’s lead negotiator on the currency agreement that was part of the Pacific trade deal.
